AEO for service businesses: make your expertise easier to understand

Answer engine optimization, commonly shortened to AEO, describes efforts to make useful information easier to find and represent in answer-oriented experiences. It is an industry term rather than a single technical standard. For a service business, the practical task is to make your expertise, offer and evidence clear enough that people and retrieval systems can interpret them accurately.

Begin with questions from real buying conversations

Collect questions from sales calls, onboarding and support: Who is this service for? What must a client prepare? What is included? How is success evaluated? When is a different approach better? Group questions by the decision they support rather than generating a large list of lightly different phrases.

Answer directly near the relevant heading, then explain conditions, examples and exceptions. For a workflow review, describe the deliverable and inputs before discussing your broader philosophy. Clear answers help a human reader even if no AI system ever cites the page.

Make the source trustworthy and specific

Identify the business and responsible author where appropriate. Explain relevant experience without inflated credentials. Link to original evidence, date changing information and distinguish observations from hypothetical examples. Keep case-study scope visible: one client's outcome is not a guarantee for another.

Use consistent service names and maintain accurate public business information. If different pages describe conflicting scopes or terms, fix that inconsistency. An answer system cannot reliably resolve a promise your own website leaves ambiguous.

Keep the content technically accessible

For Google's AI features in Search, Google states that established SEO practices remain relevant and no special optimization or additional technical requirement is needed beyond the documented requirements. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Keep useful public content crawlable and indexable where intended, available in text and supported by ordinary internal links.

Use structured data only when it accurately describes visible content and follows the relevant documentation. There is no universal AEO schema that guarantees a citation. An llms.txt file is not a guaranteed route into AI answers and should not replace normal site accessibility, accurate content or the policies governing crawler access.

Build an answer page with depth

Use a straightforward pattern: the question, a concise answer, the conditions that change it, a worked example and a useful next step. Add a table when options genuinely need comparing. Avoid burying the answer under promotional introductions or repeating keywords mechanically.

For example, a page about the duration of a service engagement should explain the actual scope and dependencies. If timing varies, state the factors and how an estimate is confirmed. Do not invent a universal turnaround simply because a short answer looks attractive.

Measure with appropriate limits

ObservationWhat it can tell you
A sampled answer cites your pageThat system used it in that observed response
An identifiable referral arrivesA measurable visit occurred through that path
A prospect mentions an AI answerA self-reported discovery touchpoint
A qualified opportunity resultsA business outcome with potentially multiple influences

Record the system, date and question when sampling answers. Results can vary by phrasing, context and product changes. Some answers generate no click; some referrals lack clear identifiers. A handful of prompts is not a complete visibility census. Review the content for accuracy and usefulness first, then treat answer citations as one discovery signal within a broader acquisition report.
