Give the audit a business question
Impact research suggests that an AI-influenced journey can still include a visit to a brand. That makes the handoff worth inspecting.
Start with the client’s actual problem: unsuitable enquiries, repeated questions, a confusing offer or a weak transition from recommendation to action. Do not sell an unexplained AI score. Agree on the buyer, offer, page and business outcome before gathering examples.
Collect three kinds of evidence
First, collect customer language from authorized sales and support materials, removing identifying details. Second, gather approved facts about the offer, current page and fulfilment process. Third, capture a small, repeatable set of discovery observations from relevant search and AI services.
Keep observed answers separate from your explanation of why they appeared. Record the prompt, service, date, settings and cited URLs. A model’s explanation of its own recommendation is not an audit of the ranking system.
Follow the promise through the whole handoff
- Discovery: What problem is the buyer trying to solve, and what promise do they encounter?
- Verification: Can they check fit, scope, proof and limitations?
- Action: Does the next step work and ask for appropriate information?
- Response: Who owns the enquiry and communicates what happens next?
A fictional CRM consultant might have a good article about onboarding but an enquiry page that never says which systems they support. That is a concrete clarity problem. More awareness content may bring more people to the same unanswered question.
Deliver a repair brief with an owner
The handoff should name the affected URL, the buyer question, the approved answer, evidence, acceptance criteria and review date. Include the exact revised section, not merely a recommendation to “improve trust.” Assign a person to approve factual claims and another owner for ongoing updates when necessary.
For a partner or creator asset, specify what the audience needs to understand and what evidence the creator can use. Agree on approvals and usage permissions. Do not require a creator to present supplied claims as personal experience.
Use the toolkit selectively
The Impact partnership collection is useful for team discussion. Our assessment: use it to choose a relevant question, then verify any quantitative claim in its original source. It is a vendor resource, not independent proof that a client needs a particular platform.
Google’s AI search guidance says standard SEO practices still apply; special AI optimizations are not required for its AI search features. A service scope should therefore promise work you control: clearer information, technical checks and documented measurement.
Measure the repair and its practical limits
Track accepted enquiries, qualification, response time and agreed next steps in the client’s existing system. Record identifiable referral traffic separately. Ask a voluntary discovery question when it fits the customer experience, with “not sure” as an acceptable answer.
Review a comparable period and log changes in offers, seasonality and campaigns. A small before-and-after comparison can guide the next decision, but it does not isolate causal lift. Report the repaired defect and observed outcomes without turning them into a guaranteed growth claim.
